Ca Mau: forest, mud and the end of the road
The southern tip of Vietnam: peat-swamp cassia forest at U Minh Ha, mangrove coast at the cape, and a province of canals and shrimp ponds that the new expressway has finally brought within a day's drive.

What this place is
Ca Mau is where the delta runs out of land. Two kinds of forest define it. Inland, U Minh Ha is peat-swamp cassia forest, a national park since 2006 and the core zone of the Mui Ca Mau biosphere reserve recognised by UNESCO in 2009. On the coast, the Mui Ca Mau national park protects mangrove and mudflat at the southern tip of the mainland, about 8°37'N, listed as a Ramsar site in 2013.
Between them is working country: canals, shrimp and crab ponds, rice where the water is fresh enough, and towns that live by the water. It is not pretty in a postcard way, and the cape itself is a park with monuments, a sea wall and a national coordinate marker, GPS0001, rather than a wild headland. What it gives an active traveller is rowing in forest canals, riding flat lanes at dawn, and walking a mangrove coast that is still being built by mud.

How many nights, and why
Three nights. The drive from Ho Chi Minh City takes most of the first and last days even on the expressway, which the press puts at about 4½ hours for the corridor; U Minh Ha takes a morning; the cape is 120 km further south and deserves a night of its own so you are there at dawn and dusk. With two nights you would choose between the forest and the cape.
Our 4-day Ca Mau trip spends two nights in Ca Mau city and one in a farmstay at Dat Mui.

When to go
Most comfortable December to February; rainiest September; boats go furthest in U Minh Ha in the rainy months.
Guides to U Minh Ha recommend the start of the dry season, December to February, for comfort, and say the rainy months from about May to November are the time for boat trips deep into the forest, when the canals are full. Across the lower delta, September is the wettest month and April the hottest.
Two other seasonal facts matter. Salt water pushes up the river mouths in the dry season, and Ca Mau is among the provinces exposed to it. And dengue peaks in Vietnam between June and October, so take mosquito precautions seriously in the forest and at dusk.

When to skip it
- You have fewer than four days for the delta in total.
- You are looking for beaches. The coast here is mud and mangrove.
- You need hotels of a certain standard every night; the cape has farmstays.
- September, if heavy rain would spoil the trip for you.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is the cape a long walk?
No. The park is compact; electric carts run between six points, and we walk it instead.
What is U Minh Ha like from a boat?
Narrow canals under dense cassia and dark water. Small rowed boats (xuong ba la) take visitors along the little canals.
Is U Minh Thuong the same place?
No. U Minh Thuong is a separate national park to the north, now in An Giang province. Our trip goes to U Minh Ha.
What is the food like?
Ca Mau mornings start with bánh tầm cay; U Minh is known for snakehead grilled in straw (cá lóc nướng trui); at the cape, seafood dishes.
