Grading and fitness: what each grade asks

Every trip on this site has a grade from 1 to 3. The grade tells you how many hours a day you will be moving, over what ground and in what heat. This page explains the scale, gives a self-check, and lists every route segment by grade.

The scale

GradeNameA typical dayMain effort
1SteadyUp to 25 km on a bike or 5 km on foot; boat timeEarly starts
2Active25–50 km of flat riding, or 5–10 km walking, in two blocksHeat and humidity
3DemandingA climb toward 716 m on steps and steep paths, or 50+ km of ridingSustained climbing in heat

There is no Grade 4. The delta has no long climbs and no remote trails; the hardest day we run is the Cam Mountain climb, and even that ends with a cable car down. Grades describe our trips, not the delta in general, and each trip page shows its grade next to the kilometres per day.

What heat does to a grade

A 40 km ride in Europe in spring and a 40 km ride in the Mekong Delta in April are different efforts. Mean daily maximums in Can Tho run from about 30 °C in January to about 34 °C in April, with humidity around 80% or higher. In practice that means more frequent stops, more water, and shorter blocks. A Grade 2 day in April feels closer to Grade 3 for many people; the same day in January is comfortably Grade 2.

The cycling page shows the month-by-month numbers and how we schedule around them.

A self-check before you book

  1. Can you ride a bicycle for an hour without stopping, on flat ground, at a relaxed pace? If yes, Grade 2 riding is within reach.
  2. Can you ride two separate blocks of two hours on the same day? If yes, the longest Grade 2 days suit you.
  3. Can you climb stairs steadily for 30 minutes, rest, and repeat several times in a morning? If yes, the Cam Mountain climb (Grade 3) is realistic.
  4. Do you handle heat? If 30 °C makes you unwell at home, choose December to February and Grade 2.
  5. Are you comfortable on narrow paths beside water, and on steep little bridges? If not, tell us; we choose wider lanes.

Answer honestly in the form's notes. A plain 'rides 20 km at weekends, hates heat' is the most useful thing we can read.

Lowering or raising a grade

Every trip can be made easier: ride in the van for a block, take the cable car up Cam Mountain as well as down, swap the long Tram Chim boat route for the short one. Most can be made harder too: add an afternoon block, ride from Chau Doc to Tra Su and back, or add side lanes on An Binh.

Tell us in the form which way you want to move. The trips are on the tours page; the places on the destinations page.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which trip is the easiest?

Tram Chim and Ca Mau are Grade 2 with more boat time. Ben Tre is Grade 2 with the most riding.

Which trip is the hardest?

An Giang, because of the Cam Mountain climb. Without the climb it is Grade 2.

Is there an age limit?

No fixed limit. Fitness and heat tolerance matter more than age. Teenagers who ride regularly manage Grade 2.

Do I need to train?

A few weeks of regular riding or stair walking before you travel makes the trip more enjoyable, particularly for Grade 3.
