Tram Chim: a wetland that needs water
A protected fragment of the Plain of Reeds in Dong Thap, flooded for part of each year and dry grassland for the rest. When the water is in, it is one of the delta's quietest places to spend a dawn on a boat.

What this place is
The Plain of Reeds is the seasonal wetland of the upper delta: sedge, grass and cassia that flood every year. Tram Chim protects part of it as a national park, now listed under the Ramsar convention. A large sedge meadow, 2,968 ha by one count, is where the sarus cranes once fed on snails, crabs and frogs.
The honest picture: this is not a game park. Wild sarus cranes, the birds that made Tram Chim famous, are reported to have collapsed in number (we found no current count), and in 2025 and 2026 the park received 12 cranes from Thailand for a conservation and breeding programme. A fire in June 2024 burned more than 20 ha of forest; the press reported it recovering by that October. What you do see, in the right months and the right hours, is a wide flooded landscape with storks, egrets, cormorants and wild ducks moving between roosts and feeding grounds.

How long to stay
One night is enough to do it properly; two if you want a rest day or to pair it with An Giang. The reason is the clock. Birds leave their roosts at dawn and return in the late afternoon, and one press report recommends being out from 05:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 17:00. A day trip from Ho Chi Minh City gets you to the park at the worst time, around midday, in full heat.
Our 2-day Tram Chim trip takes the 12 km route at dusk and the 21 km route at dawn, with dyke-lane riding in between.

When to go
Flood months about August to November; February for nesting migrants; dry and hot April to July.
Vietnamese press describes the flood season, roughly August to November in the lunar calendar, as the most beautiful time: lotus and water lilies flower and the birds breed. February is the other good month, when migrant birds arrive to nest. A 2024 guide says the hoang dau an flowers colour the grassland from December to February; check locally.
From about April to July the park is dry and hot, the boats have little water and the experience is thin. Weekends in the flood season bring more than 100 visitors a day, still small by delta standards but enough to change the mood at the jetty.

Getting there
- By road from Ho Chi Minh City: Cao Lanh is about 145 km, 2¾–3¼ hours by road model; Tram Chim is further north in the Tam Nong area. Allow 3–3½ hours.
- From Chau Doc or Tra Su: by road across the upper delta, which makes An Giang and Tram Chim a natural pair.
- Inside the park: by park boat. Routes published in 2024 ran 12 km (about 1½ hours) and 21 km (about three hours).

When to skip it
- Between April and July. The water is gone.
- If your main reason is sarus cranes. They are no longer a reliable sight in the wild.
- On a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City that arrives at noon.
- If boats and early starts are the only things you do not enjoy; most of Tram Chim is seen from the water.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Can I cycle inside the park?
We do not ride inside the park; we ride the public dyke lanes around it and move inside by boat.
Are the cranes visible to visitors?
The cranes from Thailand are kept in a conservation area within the park. Whether visitors can see them is not stated in what we have read; ask on arrival.
What should I bring?
Binoculars, a hat, long light clothing and repellent. Boats have little shade.
Is it busy?
Weekdays are quiet. Flood-season weekends see more than 100 visitors a day.
