The flood season, explained for active travellers
Every year the Mekong rises and spreads over the upper delta. Locals call it mùa nước nổi, the floating-water season. It is the right time for some of our trips and a reason to avoid others. This page sets out what is known, what is not, and how we plan around it.
What happens
In the rainy season the Mekong carries far more water than in the dry season, and the upper delta near Cambodia, around Chau Doc, Tan Chau and the Plain of Reeds, floods. Fields become sheets of water, the cassia forests at Tra Su and Tram Chim fill, and boats reach places that are dry ground in April. This is the regular annual flood, not a disaster; the delta's farming and fishing are built on it.
The timing is described in ranges. The national tourism authority recommends Chau Doc from September to November, when water fills Tra Su. Vietnamese press describes Tram Chim's flood season as roughly August to November. We did not find an official month range for onset and recession, so treat these as typical, not fixed.

A recent year in numbers: 2025
| Measure | 2025 forecast | Record (2000) |
|---|---|---|
| Flood crest at Tan Chau and Chau Doc | 8–13 October | — |
| Water level at Tan Chau | 3.70–3.90 m | 5.06 m |
| Water level at Chau Doc | 3.50–3.70 m | 4.90 m |
| Can Tho, downstream | 2.25–2.30 m, near the 2022 record | — |
The ministry's 2025 bulletin advised residents to limit travel during high tides, from 05:00 to 08:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, and noted that riverside streets in Can Tho and Vinh Long flood at peak tides in October and November. Downstream, the peaks are tied to the tides: around 10–12 October and 8–9 November in 2025.

Upper delta and lower delta
The flood is an upper-delta event. In the lower delta, near the sea, the water problem in the dry season is the opposite: salt water pushing up the river mouths. In the 2025–26 dry season the peak was forecast for March and April, with salinity of 4‰ reaching 30–35 km up the Ham Luong, 35–40 km up the Co Chien and 35–42 km up the Hau. Former Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang are among the exposed areas.
For trip planning, this splits the year neatly. The upper delta (An Giang, Tram Chim) works from September to November. The lower delta (Ben Tre, Ca Mau) is most comfortable from December to April.

What the flood changes on our routes
| Activity | In the flood months | In the dry months |
|---|---|---|
| Riding dyke lanes | Water on both sides; some low lanes under water, so routes change | Dry, dusty, hot by 10:00 |
| Rowing at Tra Su | Boats go deeper into the forest | Shorter loops, lower water |
| Boats at Tram Chim | 12 km and 21 km routes over flooded grassland | Little water; not worth the trip |
| Hiking Cam Mountain | Paths can be slippery; storm days cancelled | Drier paths |
| Riding in Vinh Long and Can Tho | Peak tides flood riverside streets in Oct–Nov | No tidal flooding |

Month by month
Upper delta rated for water landscapes and boats; lower delta rated for riding comfort.
Our flood-season trips are Tram Chim in high water and An Giang wetlands & mountains. The places are described on the Tram Chim and An Giang pages.
Practical points
- Book weekdays. Flood-season weekends fill Tra Su and Tram Chim.
- Expect route changes. A dyke lane can be under water one week and clear the next.
- Mosquitoes. The flood months overlap the dengue peak, June to October.
- Rain. September is the wettest month of the year in Can Tho, about 451 mm on average.
- River travel to Cambodia. Some large boats cannot pass low bridges into Chau Doc at high water in October and November; the small public boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh is a different service.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is the flood season dangerous for visitors?
In a normal year, no. It is a regular seasonal flood. Follow local advice, avoid travel at the highest tides, and expect some routes to change.
When exactly does the water peak?
It varies by year. In 2025 the crest at Tan Chau and Chau Doc was forecast for 8–13 October. Check the forecasts closer to your dates.
Can we cycle in the flood season?
Yes, on raised dyke roads and concrete lanes. Some low lanes go under water, so the guide picks the route each day.
Is the dry season better?
For riding in the lower delta, yes. For wetlands in the upper delta, no.
